St Anna's Medical Mission Volunteer

St. Annas Medical Mission is in need of physician-volunteers

What a terrific experience! There are so many things I want to say to you about my week with you and your staff I don't know where to start. I have so much respect for what you are doing. All the questions and reservations I had about the program when I decided to come down were satisfied by the first day. Let me sum up by saying that what you're doing is in my opinion the real thing: offering quality, professional, compassionate care to people who really are in need of it, in a very difficult environment, and with grace and ease and a sense of humor. Dr. Bill Elledge, McKenna, WA

Especially those in the field of Family Medicine, Community Medicine, Internal Medicine, Geriatric Medicine or Psychiatry. If you are a licensed physician and can adapt to the limitations of providing medical care in a van , we hope you will seriously consider volunteering for just ONE, 25-hour week of service with St. Annas Medical Mission.

What medical conditions we address

The majority of what we treat on our RV rounds is, hypertension (uncontrolled or out of meds, but new cases also), depression, hyperglycemia (uncontrolled or out of meds, occasional new cases), colds/flu, rashes, cuts/scrapes, boils. We generally refill prescriptions for about a month and refer patients to a local clinic for more continual care. If the MD is capable, we have suture sets and I&D sets, but nothing extensive. Our Medical Director is not covered under his malpractice for Peds, so refer parents to any of several local resources for Peds.

Licensure

The LA-DHH has established a process with the Board of Medical Examiners (MDs) to temporarily license physicians coming to New Orleans. St. Annas will provide packets of paperwork that would need to be completed and returned to their nurse coordinator with copies of licenses, DEA cards, health insurance cards and photo ID (drivers license) to begin that process. It normally takes about 2 weeks to complete. Once you arrive in New Orleans, the MD must physically go to the DHH office between the hours of 9:00 am and 3:00 pm (Monday through Friday) to have his or her identity verified before working. St. Annas nurse coordinator will provide directions.
